Mayawathi skips Lalu Prasad Patna rally

Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati has decided to skip a rally called by Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, where Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav will also be present. Earlier, Akhilesh Yadav had said that he would attend Yadav’s rally in Patna on August 27 and added that Mayawati would also be present there.

The latest development is a big setback to the speculation that said arch-rivals SP and BSP may shed hostility and inch closer in view of the BJP’s spectacular rise in Uttar Pradesh.“I will be present at Lalu Prasadji’s Bihar rally on Aug 27 and Mayawati will also be there. If there is any announcement it will be made there”, Akhilesh was quoted as saying by Press Trust of India.

Both SP and BSP leaders were invited by the RJD chief to his party’s mega rally in Patna. The talks of a ‘joint opposition’ picked up the pace soon after JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar cut his ties with the RJD and the Congress. Kumar went ahead to ally with BJP only to be sworn-in as the chief minister again the next day. This also gave birth to infighting in JDU as party veteran Sharad Yadav declared that he was still with the ‘mahagathbandhan’, including the RJD and the Congress.

Recently, Sharad Yadav also held a three-day Jan Samvad Yatra to discuss the repercussions of the withdrawal of the grand alliance in the state, adding that the ‘faith’ of 11 crore people of Bihar was ‘broken’.
